steelHead

Sculptural Collage

Fall, 2014

steelHead is a group of architecture students brought together by a passion for investigating and building upon digital fabrication methods and processes. This piece began as an investigation in methods of producing complex three dimensional surfaces from two dimensional materials. The investigation first looked at how the traditional waffle structure can be pushed to generate new forms and subsequently how standard materials can begin to imply these forms.

A section of the central “metal” form-work was wrapped with steel scales utilizing a pattern that would allow the sheet metal to bend in multiple directions. Steam bent White Oak allowed more fluidity and emotion to enter the piece.

The final composition was positioned above a mirror extending the piece into floor and creating captivating experience.
