The design for the Riverfront Apartments aims to provide affordable housing for young professionals as well as enhance the pedestrian experience of the proposed "Riverwalk" master plan for downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The site is currently a collection of surface parking lots with overgrown riverbanks blocking scenic views of the Cumberland River.
Pergolas span between buildings to frame views toward the river; creating a terminus to a primary downtown axis. The proposed design incorporates an ADA accessible ramp to Hargreaves’ proposed "Riverwalk," as well as a tower with a spiral staircase leading to the waters’ edge. The structure is raised on pilotis to provide both covered parking for tenants and a transparency from the city to the water. The regimented orthogonal city facade responds to the grid of a city while the placement of the units creates a dynamic composition on the river facade responding to the natural ebb and flow of the riverbank topography.
Gay St. terminus frames views toward river and mountains.
